Abstract

This paper examines the role of public theology in strengthening Indonesia's sovereignty amid global dynamics marked by the interaction between Western and Eastern values. The focus is on how public theology can function as a space for critical reflection and socio-political praxis that strengthens national identity and dignity. The aim is to reveal the relevance of public theology in formulating a vision of Indonesia that is not only economic and technocratic, but also rooted in the spiritual, ethical and cultural values of the nation. This paper uses a literature review methodology. Data was collected through an inventory of relevant written sources such as books, scientific journals, research reports, and documents. The collected data was then analysed using a descriptive qualitative approach, which involved interpreting and processing it in depth, constructing a theoretical framework, and conducting a conceptual and critical analysis of the various views found in the literature. The findings of this paper show that public theology has three main contributions: first, as a critique of the dominance of global ideologies that have the potential to weaken sovereignty; second, as a reinforcer of the values of justice, solidarity, and diversity within the framework of nationality; and third, as a bridge for East-West dialogue that enriches Indonesia's perspective without losing its identity. Thus, public theology plays an important role in maintaining a balance between openness to globalisation and the affirmation of national sovereignty, so that Indonesia's vision of progress can be realised in a more holistic and civilised manner.
